Russia Has Reached An Impasse In The Development Of The Baikal Airplane

A billion-dollar project is being shut down.

Russia is closing the project to create a new airplane "Baikal", which was supposed to replace the Soviet "kukuznik" An-2. This is reported by The Moscow Times.

Work on the novelty has reached a dead end, said Russian presidential envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev. In addition, he said, serial production of the Baikal is no longer planned.

"You know that we have been working on the development of the Baikal small airplane. As of today, it has reached a dead end. That is, we are not expected to have the Baikal aircraft," Trutnev said.

The Russian official noted that there is "practically no small aviation in Russia" and the aggressor country will have to get out of the situation by "remotorizing An-2 aircraft."

It is noted that work on the Baikal has been underway since 2019, and a subsidiary of the Ural Civil Aviation Plant, Baikal Engineering, was engaged in it. Initially, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade allocated 3.5 billion rubles for the project, expecting to put the plane into mass production in 2024. It was expected that one airplane would cost 120 million rubles.

But during the design process, the cost of the Baikal rose sharply to 455 million rubles. After Putin's remarks, for some reason it fell to 280 million rubles, and the production of the novelty was postponed until 2025.

The Russian media wrote that during the development of this aircraft designers made mistakes, because of which it "actually has to be reassembled". And the developer demanded another 10 billion rubles and five years for the project.

"LMS-901 "Baikal" was going to be used on local airlines. It was assumed that the aircraft would be designed to carry up to nine passengers or up to 2 tons of cargo. The cruising speed of the aircraft was supposed to be up to 300 km per hour, and the maximum flight range - 3 thousand kilometers," the material says.
