Britain And Germany Will Create Weapons With A Strike Range Of 2,000 Kilometers

The countries signed a bilateral defense pact.

Britain and Germany will jointly develop a new "deep precision strike" weapon with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers.

The project builds on last year's commitment to develop new weapons, when the two countries signed a bilateral defense pact and stressed the need for Europe to be able to defend itself against any escalation of the war in Ukraine.

After signing that agreement, Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election and made it clear he expected Europe to take responsibility for its own security. That has prompted a rush on the continent to find ways to boost the domestic defense industry.

Britain's Defense Minister John Healey and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius will announce a new long-range gun project at a meeting in Berlin.

"In a more dangerous world, NATO and European allies stand united. This partnership helps us turn defense into an engine for growth - creating jobs, improving skills and attracting investment across the UK and Germany," Healey said in a statement ahead of the meeting.

No further details on the timing or budget of the project are yet available.

The ministers are also expected to also discuss the joint purchase of torpedoes for maritime patrol reconnaissance aircraft, as well as announce a deal for Germany to buy British-made military bridges.
