WSJ: Trump Moves On To New Plan For Peace In Ukraine

U.S. officials are disappointed with the outcome of the Istanbul talks.

U.S. leader Donald Trump has apparently decided to forego new pressure on Russian Federation for now and instead focus on a possible meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, believing it could unblock the path to peace in Ukraine. This is according to The Wall Street Journal.

The journalists note that U.S. officials, after talks between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul, although they expressed disappointment with the outcome of those contacts, Trump himself may have set his sights on a potential summit with Putin.

The piece says that the Kremlin from the beginning sought talks directly with Trump - without the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders.

In turn, CNN writes, citing an unnamed Turkish official, that the talks between Kiev and Moscow in Turkey were "more positive than expected." According to the TV channel's interlocutor, within the framework of these talks, "the parties did not use accusatory language."

He also said that the Kremlin's demand for the "withdrawal" of the Ukrainian army from four regions of Ukraine, which the aggressor country is trying to fully occupy, was voiced "in the context of talking about a ceasefire."

"At a moment when the situation seemed to have reached an impasse, we proposed a prisoner-of-war exchange that would include three categories - children, civilians and soldiers," the source added.

The Times meanwhile quotes a commentary by political analyst Samuel Sharap, who also notes that the talks went "better than predicted." In particular, he emphasizes the agreement on the exchange of prisoners and the decision to continue the negotiation process.
