A "viral campaign of fake news" has been launched on Telegram and other social networks.

Romania's government has recorded "signs of Russian interference" in the country's presidential runoff election, German Wave reported.

"In the ongoing presidential election in Romania, we again see signs of Russian interference," Romanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Cernea wrote on social network X on Sunday, May 18.

He said a "viral campaign of fake news" had been launched on Telegram and other social networks to influence the election process.

Earlier, Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov said the government of a Western European country had asked the messenger in connection with Romania's presidential election to "silence conservative voices."

"I categorically refused. Telegram will not restrict the freedoms of Romanian users or block their political channels," Durov wrote in his Telegram channel, accompanying a question about the name of the country that requested it with a baguette emoji.
