The country's defense secretary revealed under what conditions this would happen.
Austria has not ruled out its participation in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, but the issue will depend on the mission's mandate.
Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner said this, Die Welt reported.
The journalists asked whether Austria could, under certain conditions, join with other countries in a "coalition of the willing" to ensure peace in Ukraine.
"The Austrian Federal Army has proven over six decades that it is capable of being involved in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine," the journalists said. In the specific case of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, everything will depend on exactly what the mandate will be, what opportunities for our involvement might open up, and whether our expertise is needed at all. But I do not rule out that we could join in ensuring peace in Ukraine if it comes to that," Tanner replied.
At the same time, she clarified that Austria is not yet involved in the ongoing negotiations within the framework of a "coalition of the willing." Tanner also refuted accusations that Austria is allegedly a "stowaway" in the field of European security, pretending to be neutral. The head of the Austrian Defense Ministry noted that such a position is not indifference.
