CNN: The Decisive Battle Around Trump

Today could be a turning point.

The outcome of the war in Ukraine now depends not on events on the battlefield, but on political maneuvering around U.S. President Donald Trump. Analysts believe that it is his position that could be decisive in trying to end the war, notes CNN.

"The real battle in the Ukrainian war is now taking place not in the skies above Kiev or the Dnieper River.... The decisive battle that is unfolding between the warring sides and their allies is being fought for the attention of US President Donald Trump, who seems increasingly frustrated with efforts to achieve peace," the publication writes.

Trump is expected to hold a phone conversation with Russian ruler Vladimir Putin that could be a turning point. Moscow and Kiev are trying to convince Trump that it is the other side that is preventing peace.

European officials are already expressing concern that Trump's view of the conflict could be shaped by whoever he speaks to last."

Trump has previously condemned the missile strike on Kiev after speaking with Vladimir Zelensky, saying he doubts Putin's sincerity of intent. That sentiment escalated after the failure of direct Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul. Trump decided to intervene in the peace process again by calling Putin.

Anxiety in Ukraine raises the possibility that the two leaders will work out their own peace plan over the phone and potentially try to impose terms on Putin under the renewed threat of blocking vital U.S. military and economic aid.

At the same time, analysts say, Trump has leverage over the Kremlin as well. The Kremlin wants to avoid prompting an angry Trump to restore U.S. support for Ukraine's military efforts.

Despite the talks, the sides are still not ready for a compromise. The publication summarized:
