Trump's Matchmaker Became U.S. Ambassador To France
Charles Kushner

He has Belarusian roots.

The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm Charles Kushner as the nominee of Charles Kushner to be U.S. ambassador to France.

It was reported by CNN.

Charles Kushner is the father-in-law of Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and the matchmaker of the US president.

His nomination was approved by the votes of 51 senators, 45 voted against.

The Kushner family has close ties to Belarus. His parents are originally from Novogrudok. Charles' mother Raya was the daughter of a prosperous furrier Zeidel, the family had two stores. In 1941, the Kushner family, as well as 24 thousand Jews from the surrounding towns, the Nazis sent to the ghetto, which was located near the Novogrudok castle. At the same time, 16-year-old Raya's mother Hinda and older sister Esther were shot.

After surviving five selections for mass shootings, Raya and her brother Honya and other ghetto prisoners decided to organize an escape. They began digging a tunnel under the fence. At first they used their hands and spoons, then they invented clever tools that made the work easier. Among the prisoners found electricians who were able to conduct light into the tunnel, and the earth was hidden in the double walls.

The tunnel was dug for four months, on September 26, 1943 the escape took place - the most massive of concentration camps and ghettos during the war. 360 people escaped through the tunnel, not all of them survived. The survivors, among them Raya Kushner, joined the Jewish partisan detachment of the Bielski brothers. There Raya met her future husband Joseph Berkowitz, who was also from Novogrudok. They married after the war in Budapest, with Josef taking his wife's last name, and soon emigrated to the United States.
