The EU Has Imposed Sanctions Against Russia Under Four Regimes

The next package is in the pipeline.

"The "largest ever" simultaneous application of several sanctions regimes against Russia was approved on Tuesday, May 20, in Brussels by the foreign ministers of the European Union at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, writes Deutsche Welle.

The meeting participants approved restrictive measures against Russia under four sanctions regimes: for its war of aggression against Ukraine, for gross violations of human rights, for hybrid activities against Western countries and for p In total, more than 130 separate sanctions were adopted, including against the Russian military-industrial complex, the "shadow fleet" and its accomplices, suppliers of sanctioned goods to Russia from third countries, as well as propaganda and disinformation disseminators.

Four sanctions regimes

In the framework of the 17th package of punitive measures for Russian aggression in Ukraine, 75 new legal entities and individuals, as well as 189 vessels of the "shadow fleet" were added to the sanctions lists. Thus, the number of persons on this EU list will reach more than 2,400 and vessels - 342, follows from the document published in the official journal of the EU.

The new restrictions affected, in particular, the CEO of PJSC KAMAZ Sergey Kogogin and the oil company Surgutneftegaz. A total of 17 individuals and 58 legal entities, mostly related to the production of weapons and military equipment, including drones, are included in the document.

The European Union's sanctions regime for hybrid activities has introduced sectoral measures as well as individual penalties against 27 individuals and legal entities in Russia.

An additional 28 individuals and legal entities from Russia have been added to the sanctions lists under the EU's global sanctions regime for human rights violations. Among them are Judge Olesya Mendeleeva, who convicted political prisoner Alexei Gorinov, and Svetlana Zhuravleva, who acted as state prosecutor in the same trial. All the others are also judges, prosecutors and investigators, and there is one official from the Federal Service for the Execution of Punishments.

A separate list related to the "proliferation and use of chemical weapons" in Ukraine was approved. It includes the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Defense Ministry and two departmental research institutes.

The next package of sanctions is under development

European Commission Chairwoman Ursula von der Leyen said a few days ago that the EU is already preparing the next large-scale package of sanctions against Russia. The measures have not yet been approved by the EU Council, but foreign ministers will discuss them at a meeting in Brussels.

Von der Leyen said the new package will include sanctions against Russia's financial sector, as well as the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in order to prevent the revival of these projects. In addition, a blacklist of Russian "shadow fleet" vessels will be added. The EU is also discussing with its G7 partners the reduction of the oil price ceiling, which is currently at 60 dollars per barrel.
