The President of the United States announced the first tranche for the construction of the Golden Dome.
U.S. President Donald Trump said that the development of a new "Golden Dome" defense system, which is supposed to protect against long-range missile attacks, will cost a total of $175 billion. And has agreed to release the first tranche.
It was reported by ABC News and Politico.
In a speech in the Oval Office, the U.S. leader said he was "pleased to announce that one big beautiful bill will include $25 billion for the Gold Dome to help start construction."
Trump said that overall, "we're talking about a total cost of $175 billion when this is completed."
It is worth noting that such a "price tag" to begin construction of the project still has to be approved by U.S. lawmakers.
Discussions on the project
Ahead of that, a White House spokesman told Western media that the US president's announcement of a $25 billion tranche for the ambitious Golden Dome project was intended to impose "a certain structure on an idea that is still in its very early stages."
The project in question is one that would unify air defenses "from sensors, satellites and missile batteries over the entire United States," Politico writes.
The funding now in Trump's bill was discussed May 20 during the president's meeting with House Republicans, according to media reports.
The Estimates and Efficiency Question
The initial $25 billion investment is in line with the amount proposed by the White House in a bill with a record budget for the U.S. military that has yet to make it through Congress.
The Congressional Budget Office previously estimated that a national defense system against ballistic and cruise missiles would cost more than $500 billion over the next two decades.
Pentagon officials told Western journalists that General Michael Getlein, the Space Force's vice chief for U.S. space operations, would lead the Golden Dome project.
Democratic Party officials in the States have expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the expensive new defense shield. The United States already has 44 interceptor missiles spread across California and Alaska, Senator Mark Kelly told a security summit last week.
Previous administrations in the States have considered placing more interceptor missiles on the East Coast. But officials have repeatedly dismissed the idea, given the cost and length of time needed to complete the project.
What's special about the project
The commander of the U.S. Space Force, Gen. Chance Saltzman, says the Golden Dome system is not one big umbrella that protects the country "from a number of threats." He says many of the sensors and systems to do that already exist, but they need to be connected via a software backbone.
"What Golden Dome does is allow us to do a more holistic analysis of the mission. Here are the gaps, where are the problems? Where can we be more robust in our defense of the homeland?" - Western media quoted the US general as saying.
As previously reported, in late January, Trump signed a series of executive orders, including the creation of a defense system to protect the country. One of those executive orders concerned Project Iron Dome, which was later renamed Golden Dome.
