Italy Backs EU Plan To Abandon Russian Gas

Italy Backs EU Plan To Abandon Russian Gas

The plan to refuse fuel from Russia is to be implemented by the end of 2027.

Italy fully supports the European Union's efforts to stop importing Russian gas. The plan to abandon fuel from Russia is to be implemented by the end of 2027.

Italy's Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin said this, Reuters reported.

"Italy fully supports these efforts," Pichetto-Fratin said.

He said Italy last year imported a small amount of Russian gas, which was mainly exported to Austria. The country is now independent of gas supplies from Russia.

In a visit to Washington in April, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni discussed with U.S. President Donald Trump a potential increase in Italy's imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States. Italy's energy minister said any such purchase should be based on competitive prices.

"The fact that we have increased regasification capacity means that there is the possibility of buying more LNG if it is competitive compared to gas coming through pipelines," said Pichetto-Fratin.

At the same time, he added that U.S. LNG is now offered at high prices when it reaches Europe.
