Berlin pledged to defend Lithuania.
The inauguration of the German brigade took place in Vilnius on Thursday, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz attending the ceremony and saying that Lithuania's security is security. Therefore, he said, Berlin has pledged to protect Lithuania. German Air Force helicopters flew over Vilnius during the event, Delfi reported.
"NATO can trust Germany. We know that security does not start at the border, it starts where our partners must protect them. Therefore, Lithuania's security is our security. The defense of Vilnius is the defense of Berlin. Our common world has no geographical borders, it ends where we stop defending it. That is why we are here now and will remain here. Germany keeps its word and confirms it with deeds: today, tomorrow, as long as necessary," Merz said in the capital's Cathedral Square.
He emphasized that Lithuania and Germany are adopting the defense of NATO's eastern flank. "We are taking over the defense of NATO's eastern flank. What is happening here shows that we Lithuanians and Germans together are ready to defend the freedom of Europe against any aggressor," the German chancellor said. "The peace in Europe has been broken. We must be ready for defense. Freedom does not come for nothing. (...) We fully understand the gravity of the situation and our responsibility," he said, referring to Russian aggression.
Merz emphasized that the Alliance has pledged to defend every inch of NATO. "Lithuania has asked for help and Germany is ready to help. Not only in words, but by sending its military, heavy equipment and a reliable partnership. Anyone who encroaches on NATO, who threatens an ally, should know that the whole Alliance will defend every centimeter of NATO at the same time," he said.
