North Korea has arrested three senior officials after the failed launch of a new warship watched by the country's leader Kim Jong Un, writes Sky News.

The incident took place in the northeastern port of Cheongjin in front of Kim himself. During the ceremony, the new 5,000-ton warship lost its balance, flipped over on its side and began taking on water. According to state media reports, the accident was caused by a technical error - the ship failed to maintain its balance when launched.

After an investigation was launched, the shipyard's chief engineer, the head of the hull construction shop and the deputy head of administrative affairs were detained. Kim Jong-un characterized the incident as a "criminal act" and promised to severely punish those responsible.

"This is not just an accident. It is blatant negligence that has undermined the dignity and self-respect of our state," said the DPRK leader.
