Russian dictator Putin does not take the negotiation process seriously. His task is to create a semblance, an imitation of negotiations in order to avoid sanctions from the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Therefore, expectations from the upcoming meeting in Istanbul are zero. This opinion

said the head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Foreign Policy of Ukraine and Interparliamentary Cooperation Alexander Merezhko.

- Personally, I and many of my colleagues have zero expectations. Because even if we judge by the composition of the delegation from the Russian side, we see that it is absolutely not representative. We see that Putin is not serious about the process of negotiating," Merezhko emphasized.

Putin is not aimed at achieving any result or even at negotiating in good faith, the MP is convinced.

- His task is very simple - to create an appearance, an imitation of negotiations in order to avoid sanctions from the Trump administration. There is nothing more. There are no expectations," the speaker said.

He assumes that in Istanbul, Russia will present its notorious "memorandum" that it has long been talking about.

- But it will be just a propaganda document, which consists of the Kremlin's previous ultimatums, absurd demands that go against the principles of international law and the UN charter. And the whole world will again come to astonishment because of the fact that the Kremlin's position is absolutely unconstructive," Merezhko noted.

But there is a more important question, he believes, whether the US will go for sanctions. Since earlier President Trump said that he allegedly gave himself a week and a half or two weeks to decide on the application of sanctions.

- This is the more important question, which has long been overripe. And we are talking about the fact that it is absolutely futile to negotiate with the Kremlin, and we need to act by tightening sanctions and increasing the level of pressure on the Kremlin. This is the only way to achieve at least some result," the speaker emphasized.

Nevertheless, Putin is interested in keeping the negotiations at least in this format, Merezhko said.

- This allows him to present himself as a party "equal" to the United States, supposedly negotiating on an equal footing with the United States. That is, the Kremlin is interested in creating the appearance of negotiations, but is absolutely not interested in any result," the expert summarized.
