Bloomberg: Ukraine's Strikes On Russia's Strategic Air Bases Stunned The Kremlin

There is a bitter sense of unease among Kremlin officials about the vulnerability of nuclear forces.

Ukraine's strike on Russian strategic bomber bases Sunday afternoon stunned Moscow, sowing a bitter sense of unease among Kremlin officials over the vulnerability of nuclear forces, according to Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the situation.

According to one of the agency's interlocutors close to the Kremlin, the attack caused the armed forces to lose about 10 aircraft that were considered safe from attack because they are stationed deep inside the country.

OSINT analysts estimated Russian losses at 13-15 machines, a figure of 13 destroyed aircraft was also cited by the pro-war z-channel Rybar.

In total, according to the Stockholm Institute for Peace Research (SIPRI), Russia has in service 55 Tu-95 and Tu-160 strategic bombers with a range of 10,000 kilometers and above, as well as another 60 Tu-22M3s, which have a range of up to 6,500 kilometers and are tactical nuclear weapon carriers.

Thereby, the AFU managed to disable up to 10% of Russia's strategic aviation. Nevertheless, Kiev's operation will not significantly reduce Russia's nuclear capabilities, sources close to the Kremlin and the Defense Ministry told Bloomberg. Most of Russia's warheads are deployed on land- and sea-based missiles - Russia has 567 of them, according to SIPRI.
