Apples In Belarus Cost More Than Bananas

Many people can't afford this fruit.

Summer is on the calendar. But treating your body to a seasonally appropriate fruit diet in Belarus is not a cheap pleasure. The most common apples can cost Br5-7 in the "country for life" - and this is not the limit, writes the site bgmedia.

The major suppliers have a common problem: delivery of imported products has become many times more complicated. Recall, in late May, the government of Belarus lifted the ban on the import and sale of apples, potatoes and some vegetables from so-called unfriendly countries, including the EU states. But the same apples, which have always been considered the most affordable fruit for our countrymen, are now more expensive than bananas.

In Brest stores of the chain "Euroopt" apples from Poland. Prices vary from 6.65 rubles per kilogram of discounted goods to 7.39 rubles for the "Golden Delicious" variety. In Green you can buy imported apples (Poland, Russia, Azerbaijan). The cost - from 5.99 to 7.17 rubles per kilogram. In "Santa" there are only Polish "golden" - 6.99 rubles.

In "Corona" there are apples from Moldova - "gloster" at 6.53 rubles. At the market there are about the same prices. The cheapest apples, obviously not very good quality, are sold for 4 rubles. And you can't say that they are being snatched up.

- Expensive for me, for my pension. For this money I can buy something more substantial, for example, one and a half or two dozen eggs. So I will wait for the new harvest. I think the apple will become cheaper in August," laments a young Brest resident at the market.

But will apples be cheaper by the end of summer? It's a big question, taking into account the fact that May frosts sharply reduced the fruit harvest this year.
