What does Berlin have to offer?
Germany could gain access to French and British nuclear warheads as part of the creation of a pan-European nuclear umbrella. Or take a major role in the development of new European nuclear weapons.
- Europe must become capable of deterrence, said the chairman of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag Jens Spahn, RBC-Ukraine reported, citing Welt.
- Europe must become capable of deterrence. For this purpose, among others, American atomic bombs are stationed in Germany. But this is not enough in the long term," he told reporters.
- According to Spahn, there are obstacles to the joint use of nuclear weapons. For example, France is unlikely to agree to transfer access to its nuclear weapons to Germany.
Therefore, the politician noted, a system could be developed to transfer control over European nuclear weapons to NATO members on a random basis. This would leave Europe's potential adversary confused about who exactly could launch a nuclear strike.
Another option is to develop new pan-European nuclear weapons that would belong to all European member states of the Alliance. Germany, Spahn noted, should take a leading role in this process.
